Gold was discovered in Ballarat in August 1851. One month later, more than 1,000 prospectors had made their way to the former sheep run, within 2 years the new town was abuzz with around 20,000 miners working shallow alluvial clay deposits on the Ballarat fields
Ballarat was certainly built on back of the gold rush & the buildings are testament to the wealth of some of
its citizens of the time

A goldfields icon since Prince Alfred Duke of Edinburgh, slept there in 1867 & Dame Nellie Melba famously sang from the balcony in 1908
