Old Bridge @ Redesdale

This old bridge certainly has a colourful history
The Redesdale bridge is situated just a short distance downstream from where
Major Mitchell made his crossing in 1836

It is a handsome iron lattice girder, single span, two lane roadway with stone abutments

The bridge was opened 23 January 1868 & a banquet & ball were held on the bridge to celebrate the occasion

Over the more than 100 years of it's history, many different & conflicting stories as to the origin & original purpose for which the bridge was built have been published.

Some claim the bridge had been intended to span the Saltwater river & others the Yarra @ Princess bridge, yet another for Yarra @ Hawthorn.

Other stories claim it to be part of the bridge at Yass NSW, another linking it to one spanning the Murray @ Yarrawonga

There was also a report that the bridge had been transported from overseas in three sections, one of these being lost at sea when the SS London was wrecked in the Bay of Biscay

After years of research by historians, it is generally accepted that the bridge was built in the UK & intended to span the Yarra river @ Hawthorn
